Discover the Louis Scherb estate

Its terroir, history and values

A unique, mosaic-like terroir

Gueberschwihr, a small commune in the Haut Rhin department, is located on the Alsace wine route, a dozen kilometers south of Colmar. Our vineyards are located in Gueberschwihr and the surrounding communes.

Protected from rain by the natural barrier formed by the Vosges mountains, this area is one of the driest in France. Facing east-south-east, the vines benefit from the sun’s rays from dawn onwards. This microclimate is particularly conducive to vine-growing.

With the mosaic of geological subsoils resulting from the collapse of the Rhine Graben and the multiple faults that ensued, our wines offer many different expressions. The flagship of our village, the Grand Cru Goldert extends over a marl-limestone terroir and produces complex, refined wines. Terroir is an essential element in the quality of a wine. It’s essential to respect this resource and its environment, so that the vines can give their very best.

That’s why we’re committed to organic farming, and our wines have been certified organic by Ecocert since 2013.

Louis Scherb, a family story

Our wines of character take their originality from their roots, as does the Louis SCHERB estate, whose identity has been forged over successive generations.

Family

The Scherb family has been rooted in Alsace’s vineyards since the Middle Ages.

1690

Arrival in Gueberschwihr

She settled in the commune of Gueberschwihr, where Engelhard Scherb worked as a cabaret owner. This was nothing like the cabarets we know today, as the trade at the time referred to a person who sold wine.

Mixed farming

Over the generations, part of the family has been involved in mixed farming and stockbreeding, with one foot already in the vineyard.

1930

Louis Scherb

Louis Scherb, who gave the estate its current name, continued farming and gradually specialized in vine growing and wine-making.
1970

Joseph, André and Annette

Two of his sons, Joseph and André, took over the family estate and developed the production and sale of bottled wine, helped by Joseph’s wife Annette.
2003

Agnès and Antoine

Agnès, Louis Scherb’s granddaughter, takes her turn on the estate. Her husband, Antoine, joined her, and together they continued to develop the Louis Scherb estate, which now covers just over 13 hectares.

2013

Bio

The fruit of questioning, trial and error and conviction, we are committed to organic farming throughout our vineyards: the estate was certified organic in 2013.

There’s more philosophy in a bottle of wine than in any book.

Philosophy

Contemplating, observing nature, understanding the terroir, respecting the Plant and gradually moving towards harmony, this is what inspires us.

Like all living things, vines are sensitive to their environment. Ensuring its proper development, then delicately accompanying the birth of the wine in the cellar, is at the heart of our profession.

The interactions are infinite, from the vine to the wine itself, which remains a living substance right up to the bottle and glass. Our wines retain a fascinating element of mystery, while at the same time revealing something of the winemaker’s soul!
